Puerto Rico, USA

El Coqui-Puerto Rico's emblem.

Once on a plane from Minneapolis to Miami, the connecting flight to San Juan was a breeze. We rented a car at the San Juan airport at 5:00 PM. Supposedly, we had a 2–hour drive to a small town named Rincon. Located on the west end of the island, Rincon is noted for excellent surfing, it's lighthouse, colorful sunsets, and beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea.

Puerto Rico sunsets are early because of the island's nearness to the equator. Once away from the main freeways, we traveled through small towns that were dimly lit and the main streets resembled Minnesota lake roads. To add to the confusion, our directions to Rincon were as if we had arrived from the Mayaguez Airport northwest Puerto Rico instead of the San Juan Airport east. We drove, turned around, drove again, and backtracked several times in the dark. Just couldn't find Rincon. By then, it was 10:00 PM. We found a tiny strip mall and almost slept the night in the car.

Attempting a last recoup, we decided that maybe it wasn't too late to call the local caretaker of the bungalow we had rented. Cordially enough, Dolores came to meet us and led us to our destination five miles away — ''La Casa Serena.'' So as you see, we came pretty close. During our stay in Puerto Rico, just about every small town plaza was undergoing heavy construction. There were some pretty indigenous detours. Whew, mission accomplished. Don't forget your cell phone.
